Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which prevents bacteria from growing and reproducing. It does this by binding to the bacterial ribosome and interfering with the process of translating genetic material into proteins, which are necessary for bacterial survival. Indications and Uses Azithromycin is commonly prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including but not limited to: Respiratory infections: such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis. Ear infections (otitis media). Skin infections. Sexually transmitted infections: such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. Throat infections: including strep throat (caused by Streptococcus bacteria). Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection: in patients with HIV.
